Fuss-free entertaining at home

Who said having a few families around to your place had to be hard work? We're all in favour of keeping things simple, especially when you're trying to do the organising with little ones around your ankles. So if there are some families who've hosted your tribe recently, it might be time to return the favour. Here's how to keep the occasion fuss-free:

  • Timing it right

Make the starting time in the late arvo, so the kids can play for a while before tucking into an early dinner. Starting your party early will ensure most guests leave by their kids' bedtime, effectively giving the occasion a finishing time. Phew, at least you won't have to provide food and drink until 1am!
  • Feeding the masses

Sit the kids down for their food soon after everyone arrives, so they aren't pestering Mum and Dad for their nibblies - pre-make each child a mini pizza, which you can pop in the oven just before the guests descend. Try fruit kebabs for dessert (make in advance and whip out of the fridge).
  • With a gathering of families, don't feel obliged to cater a sit-down meal - substantial hand-around food and plentiful drinks should keep the adults happy while they watch over their children. Opt for pre-prepared options like mini quiche, pasta salad in noodle boxes and home-made sausage rolls - filling enough to satisfy their tummies, but less expensive than catering a full meal.
  • Issuing the invitation

The easiest part is inviting everyone - check the calendar for your next free weekend, then write the guest list and send the invite ASAP - we have so many to choose from!
